The intervention covers an area of 16,000 sqm, used until 1993 by a company of the Montedison Group for the production of brome derivatives, heavily polluted by heavy metal contamination.

The land reclamation intervention, coordinated by Buonomo Veglia srl and Studio Bortolami di Molfetta for Area Geie, includes the removal and disposal of primary contamination sources, including equalization tanks, process water drainage pipe system, and demolition of towers built with refractory materials, and all buildings and structures on site. The chimney is to be reinforced, in order to preserve it as a testimony of industrial archaeology.

To prevent the propagation of contamination of groundwater, waterproof plastic lining will be placed along theperimeter of the site, reaching a depth of 7 meters underground. The permanent safety containment of thesite will be completed with the execution of a composite barrier over the surface, formed, from the bottom up,by a low-permeability clay layer, an HDPE geomembrane, and a meteoric water drainage layer, topped by surface stratum of grass-planted land.
